As winter loosens its grip and the promise of spring unfolds, cultures around the world celebrate renewal in ways both grand and intimate. This theme of transformation is at the heart of our upcoming joint exhibition, Awakening – A Global Lens on Renewal. Through photography, we invite artists to explore how change is reflected within society, communities, and individuals.
What We Are Looking For
We are calling for street photography and emotional portraiture that capture moments of transformation—whether in the energy of a city shifting seasons, the rituals of a community, or the emotions of an individual embracing change.
-
Cultural Traditions & Festivals: How do different cultures celebrate renewal? From Basel’s Fasnacht, where music and masks signal a symbolic rebirth, to global spring festivals like Holi in India or Nowruz in Iran, these traditions offer vibrant storytelling opportunities. Look for moments of ritual, costume, movement, and emotion that define these celebrations.
-
Personal Journeys & Emotional Portraits: Renewal is often deeply personal. Moments of reflection, resilience, and transformation—whether an individual starting a new chapter, a child experiencing something for the first time, or a community moving forward—offer powerful visual narratives. A simple gesture, an expression, or a fleeting moment can tell an entire story.
-
Urban Transformations: The streets are full of moments of change—seasonal shifts, evolving architecture, bustling markets, or quiet alleys as people embrace new opportunities. Document how cities reflect the continuous cycle of decay and renewal in their structures, movements, and daily rhythms.

Tips for Capturing Renewal
-
Look for contrasts: The shift from old to new, stillness to movement, shadow to light. Play with composition, framing, and perspective to emphasize transformation.
-
Capture rituals: If you’re in a place with cultural traditions linked to renewal, document the details—the preparations, emotions, and symbolic actions that define the experience.
-
Tell a story: A single image can suggest a journey—a person mid-step, a crowd in motion, a symbolic object in transition. Think about framing your subjects in a way that evokes a sense of change and movement.
